Mountain Out of Words

Begun as digital drawings, this series of paintings examines the experience of reading from the point of view of a dyslexic person. Sometimes texts become overwhelming, especially when I am tired or reading dense and unfamiliar technical material. Words double up on themselves and become a jumble of marks. Reading becomes exhausting like climbing a mountain that reaches high into the clouds. This series of paintings aims to visually interpret my experiences with scrawled strokes upon a solid background. These works are also to be interpreted as landscapes, with essays pertaining to dyslexia and neurodiversity scribbled in overwriting across the face of the mountain range. The essays speak about the experiences many dyslexics face including the feeling of shame, struggles to mental health and the uncertainty of living in a text-based world when reading is out of reach. Paintings are a combination of acrylic, oils and brush inked pen on canvas.
